The first Halo I liked. Usually, when it comes to games having sequels, the first isn't good, although that is not the case here. Halo 1 and 2 were very good.
I've not played Halo 3 yet, so no idea.

Halo 3 is very good for those who enjoy Halo games. The Online is awesome, the story is complete, and graphics make you jizz in your pants. However since the coming of COD4 I find myself looking to the awesome that is my M40A more then the Halo Sniper Rifle.

I wanna get Combat Evolved, but I haven't seen it anywhere lately (haven't been to gamestop much). Halo 2 was awesome, I loved destroying stuff with dual machine guns (and playing as the Covenant, when they team up). Halo 3, Ive played it. Its too hard, instead of being able to take a few bullets, one or two can kill you. Plus its too fast paced (the movement).

. and if you don't have the 3rd one, you're missing out. If you don't have a brain, which I suspect none of you do, you're missing out too.

I've played all the Halo games (And I am looking forward to ODST).
Halo: Combat Evolved was a game to push the console FPS genre into what it is today. I enjoyed the story, gameplay was steady, and the graphics were quite nice for its time period.
Multiplayer on the other hand was actually really nice. As people played it more, you learned that the best weapon in the game wasn't really the sniper or even the rockets. It ended up being the pistol, which can easy kill anything in three well placed headshots. It made the better players stand pretty far away from the people who were still using the assualt rifle. Multiplayer was quite chaotic.
Halo 2 comes out a bit later. I like what they did with the gameplay. They weakened the pistol but gave us the battle rifle which could four shot people if the shots were placed on the head. It ended up being the pistol that required one more shot.
Duel wielding was a nice touch to the game, but it didn't live up to the abilities of the battle rifle due to the button glitch of the BXR, which let you melee and then shoot right after it. These button glitches made the good players even better and further separated the multiplayer base. With these button glitches, one player could easily take out an entire team by himself, very chaotic.
Then Halo 3 comes around. They finished their story. Balanced out their weapons. They made the game slower, more team based when it came down to multiplayer. The Battle Rifle still did its thing, four shooting everything if you had a good aim.
Gameplay became a lot slower due to the fixing of button glitches and the balancing out of the weapons. It did, however, make it a lot more team based and the pro players actually needed a team to be good and just couldn't rely on themselves. Everything became a lot less chaotic this time around, but the action can flare up in the bigger playlists (Big Team Battle).
In the end, I enjoy LANing for all of these games. Without the lag, you can really measure someone's skill in the game. LIVE is a nice way to play, but you really can't see someone's true skill due to the lag that happens.

Wow, Jake pretty much hit the nail on the head.
I enjoy the Campaign and Multiplayer of all three of the games. It's really odd, most of the people I see think Halo 2 was either the best or the worst in the series. If They don't think it was the worst, than Halo 3 was and Combat Evolved was the best.
I think most of the people that say 2 and 3 are horrible are just living in nostalgia. The only thing that Combat Evolved had over Halo 2 was Campaign, because until Halo 3 came out, Halo 2's campaign made little to no sense for many.
I enjoy playing Halo 2 and 3 online, I play both regularly. They both have their ups and downs, but like Jake said, the Halo 2 playerbase was incredibly divided, and as Halo 3 has been out a while, it's mostly only pros online anymore. Unfortunately though that means all of the noobs have migrated to Halo 3, and you have to be pretty accepting to play Halo 3 with randoms, about half the time you'll end up being betrayed for a power weapon, and then lose half your team because they were partied up with the guy you booted.
All in all, none of the games are perfect. They all have their strong suits, it just depends on what you prefer.
